Forget, please, “conservatism.” It has been, operationally, de facto, Godless and therefore irrelevant. Secular conservatism will not defeat secular liberalism because to God both are two atheistic peas-in-a-pod and thus predestined to failure. As Stonewall Jackson’s Chief of Staff R.L. Dabney said of such a humanistic belief more than 100 years ago:
“[Secular conservatism] is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation. What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today .one of the accepted principles of conservatism; it is now conservative only in affecting to resist the next innovation, which will tomorrow be forced upon its timidity and will be succeeded by some third revolution; to be denounced and then adopted in its turn. American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition. It remains behind it, but never retards it, and always advances near its leader. This pretended salt bath utterly lost its savor: wherewith shall it be salted? Its impotency is not hard, indeed, to explain. It is worthless because it is the conservatism of expediency only, and not of sturdy principle. It intends to risk nothing serious for the sake of the truth.”
Our country is collapsing because we have turned our back on God (Psalm 9:17) and refused to kiss His Son (Psalm 2).

Thank you, Masood! You brought much light to my undergraduate education. I am very sure that you will be missed.
Glenn Beck actually aligned the unions in Wisconsin with the Muslim Brotherhood. Both, apparently, are seeking one world government. See the comments as a video at http://charlesredfern.com/2011/02/22/glenn-beck-the-wisconsin-unions-the-muslim-brotherhood-world-domination/
Thank you for buzzing my blog on your website. It is really an honor to be here.
You are welcome and please feel free to share your future recipes and blogs with us.

Thanks for uploading our report
Thank you for mentioning my blog. I truly believe that social change is possible through voicing of opinions. I hope that I can be of some help in enlightening the people of my country through education – which is my primary job. I am an art educator and a collaborator with like-minded educators for a progressive Pakistan.
Thanks again for your vote of confidence.
You are welcome. I am also deeply committed to education, humanities, and the idea of a progressive Pakistan. Please let us know if we can sometime repost your ideas on The Pakistan Forum.

Thank you for adding my blog here : )
I was thinking about the same thing. I even posted this image in my blog. I did not write about it but I was thinking about it all the same. I kept wondering who she was and why she was veiled. We see Fatima Jinnah and she is never veiled – we see her face and her resolve bare-naked for all to see. Who is this lady? Why is she covered? Why does she not reveal her face? Was she somebody’s wife? Sister? Mother? Friend? Is that her only role? Perhaps she happened to be there and was photographed. Perhaps she was a participant.
You frighten me with your thought/question, that she might be a representative of all women in the future of this country. A dark covered being with no face. I do not mean to offend anyone’s religious beliefs but the thought of being bundled in a dark covering suffocates me.
I’m glad you wrote about her, though.
Yes thank you. I should have mentioned that I had also seen this imageon your blog entry that I had reposted yesterday. I would be curious to find out who this woman was. I have had no luck so far, but do hope that some readers would respond with some clues or suggestions.
We should save HEC for the common good …
I’ve been following the events that are occurring in the Middle East. And except the Presstv, any other new channel like CNN, BBC, Dawn, Geo . hardly mentions the events that are happening in Syria, Yemen and especially bahrain.. they are all only focusing Libya. so I just don’t understand why they are doing it?
Totally agree with you Waqar…
I haven’t heard of any such thing on Pakistani media. Is this news really authentic or is it just another fabricated story.
This is certainly not a fabricated story but an editorial. The flurry of activity by the Saudis and the Bahrainis suggests that this is being discussed; This is what my own sources, who would like to stay unmentioned, are also suggesting. So, one purpose of this editorial is to put my word out there in opposition to any such steps.
Ex Pakistani military is already recruited by Bahraini State. How many Pakistanis know this fact.
So they are already brutalizing their fellow Muslims. Nothing new.
Press TV is Iranian. of course they will report shia getting massacred.
Found her! Her name is Begum Amjadi Bano, Wife of Maulana Muhammad Ali ( i guess that’s the guy she is holding hands with or something).

Thank you so much. I am deeply grateful.
I would say this will be a really good dicision to support bahrain dictators, as we can’t afford another Pro Iran in the region.
I am resident of saudi and what i see this instability in GCC is more the SHIA/Sunni methology rather than dictator or democratic movement.
In Short our discussion will end up with nothing as SHIA will keep on supporting SHIA’s and Sunni will keep on supporting their counter part.
A very Happy 3rd birthday and thanks for being there.
As Christopher Hitchens would say, secularism is the only hope for a nation in the long term. And I feel very sad too – for you Mr. Hoodbhoy, for Pakistan and ultimately for India and myself too…..because Pakistan would not sink alone… it will take India along.
you are wrong sir!!!
few weeks after i reg my blog at teabreak.pk my blog disappeared from google 1st page thanks to teabreak’s SPINGING (spam pinging) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sping and creating their own pages from my stuff 🙁 🙁 i had to start a brand new blog after this google guy checked my blog and & advised me so at blogging meetup
so its not teabreak, its blogbreak sob 😛 :`(
If that is the case then why is their Google Page Rank still “4/10” and their Alexa Ranking is still 194595. Surely, if they were at fault, Google should have penalized them by now and not your blog.
I am still concerned about their pings though and will stop accepting them: thank you for pointing it out.
As a Pakistani, i find the entire international taunting of Pakistan to be incredibly dense. Lets be honest, Pakistan has faced far more casualties of civilian lives, threat to its social fabric and loss of infrastructure thanks to this cursed war. If anything Pakistanis resent American establishment far more than OBL.I know i do. And why not. This imposed war upon has caused us loss of life in drone attacks, civil fight and the puppets that serve american interests in this region better than ours. All these suicide attacks are direct result of this military offensive in Afghanistan. Pakistan went through similar upheaval in law and order at the time of afghan/soviet clash. Since than we have not improved our position so as to say no to the world hegmon if possible we have deteriorated.
Amazing read. Your words flew me back to the nerve shivering moments of holding his book in winters.
He was no different. His conviction weighed more than his rationale for standing on the stinking part of the divide.
Perhaps when the bitter truth of injustices sets in, such individuals are convinced to WALK their TALK!

You are welcome Raja Sahib: all our best wishes to you in your efforts.
Thankyou, i appreciate your concerns….
I am out of country and can guess in how worst situation Pakistan is going. But our leader, don’t care of people. In this way, if someone stands against coruption which is main thing to unstablize nation root. I really appreciate. We say we are alive nation.
Yes We are !!!
But we have to stand united against these bullshit leader who let pakistan to go day by day in decreasing position.
I call Pakistan young generation………..please come and behave like brave and patriotic pakistan to get rid of these leaders and problems. Coruptions is at its peak to destroy nation. Terrorist doing also against Pakistan to make it unstabilize. This is not called JIHAD TO kill innocent peolpe. This is not motto of great religion ISLAM. Will you be blessed by GOD at day f judgement or by Holy Prophet (PBUH). You guys destroy real images of Pakistan.
I gave much respect to Gen.Ashfaq Kinai but now he is also part of this bad team. Questions were arising against solrity of Pakistan national and defense boarder.
Come and save pakistan………If one Old guy from indian strike for india then how we can not …….we are pakistan !!!!
This is just about time that someone has come forward with this idea. I’ve never advocated the idea of a military intervention to out throw incumbent government, how corrupt and unsuccessful it may be. Democratic process should continue so as to have opportunity to evolve over the period. Such an agitation which could result in pass or amendment of bills in parliamant is the appropriate way to bring a revolution. You have all my best wishes.
Yet it is a sad fact that I have not heard of this act anywhere on electronic media, nor through social media channels. I intend to start compaigning for it theough facebook and text messages, and so should you. If such an agitation is to happen, it should bring fruits. Otherwise it’d end up lowering people’s hopes further in a peaceful revolution.
We all Indian common man are with you dear Akhtar. This is the only way 2 countries can achieve peace with each other and prosper not only by wealth but also ethically , socially and by character. All the best wishes to you , I salute not only your patriotism but also kind and compassionate qualities within you . May there arise billions of Raja Jahangir Akhtars and Anna Hazzares in India and Pakistan and throughout the world to improve quality of live in the entire world.

Your blog shall create more awareness than of Media…inshallah..its bloggers who are creating change all around the world…I admire your effort of making me aware of this hunger strike. will forward it.
Asa,
i just want to ask one simple question. what is he gaining by striking from food? i think we are in stage that is much beyond such strike. ppl are being slaughtered in wazirstan and many being flooded in sindh. don’t u think such an act is not gona grab any attention. another few days n ppl will forget him. do something big, massive and remarkable if you want to get attention and change something. hope you take my comment in a positive and constructive way.
jazak Allah

What can be more grand than to symbolically force your government to reform itself? A symbolic act like this presupposes that it will generate public solidarity. If the goverment is less corrupt and more responsive to the people, then the problems you mentioned would be moot.
Anyway, I am grateful that you have taken the time to respond to our attempt. We would love to cover any grand alternatives that you and your freinds come up with in the future.
In solidarity,
Masood Raja
We support the cause and are fully with you.
Dear Respected Sir, Thanks a lot for starting your campaign to remove corruption from your country. It’ll certainly help to make a corruption free nation and world. I’m an Indian and have been a part of Mr. Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign. I support u and my best wishes are with u.
I needed that. Thanks so much!
Must be looked at closer this issue

It’s good to be clear on some things.
There is no war on terror. Terror bombing civilian populations to force political changes to the bomber’s liking is terrorism by the Pentagon’s own definition; hence it’s a war of terror.
Second, it’s amazing that Pakistanis have put up with this nonsense to this day. Can you imagine Americans putting up with a foreign force using an American airbase to randomly kill American civilians going about their business or having a backyard barbecue in their own homes? What kind of master race ideology makes Americans think there is anything normal about this, or lets anyone in Pakistan think that it should be tolerated for a moment. It seems to me that Pakistan, like any other country in such a situation, has to pursue genuine national independence, which means – like for any other country – not allowing an occupier to use its own bases to murder its own civilian population.
I agree and thank you so much for sharing your candid thoughts with our readers.
It is time that we bring a few black hawks down. Enough is enough!
true.
Good to see Pakistani bloggers addressing almost every topic of the world. I dont think there’s any topic Pakistani bloggers havent touched !

@ Masood: I agree with most of what you have written except your partial distribution of blame between Politicians and Army. The corrupt self centered attitude of politicians cannot be attributed to Generals for the reason that all the political parties are quite old to understand the dynamics of Pakistan’s hierarchy and should have adjusted likewise, as they have always been doing to serve their own vested interests. Saying that Army’s attitude is not letting them do it, make the politicians look like children.
Every time a General takes over, he needs some political support to legitimize his rule. And the same politicians who otherwise call themselves Mujahid-e-Jamhuriat and what not, join hands with Generals while blatantly lying that they did so in the best interest of the country.
Of course Military is not supposed to rule Govts and it should be ensured for a better future of Pakistan but by whom??? Parliament, which has already wasted many chances to do it. They join hands with them instead and in rebate they get to plunder. So technically both Politicians and Military are to be blamed equally.
Commendable!
aoa. respected one.i realy need of kishwer naheed’s poems to which heaven are we rushing. taliban se qibla ru guftgu.ants consume elephant. in urdu . but unable to find anywhere. kindly help me out to find these poems in urdu.
This is outrageous. Can’t believe this is actually happening!!
Yes, it is sad but this has been quite an eye opener for me.
Really disappointed, people exploited this way. It’s despicable!
I am flabergasted to read this. This cannot be happening at the highest seat of learning, in the US.
Very nice Sensei…
They did not include your pic or snapshot of the blog… presentation should have been better… links with pics would have really aided the readers…
Wonderful interview of a wonderful human being. I guess the question ‘You have also got a blogging life, how has it directly affected both your personal and professional life?’ regarding your personal life being affected needs to be addressed to your spouse! We would love to hear her response. LOL.
On the contrary, I would disagree with you here. As a matter of fact; the current governement has transgressed all limits of looting, plunder and what not. We should rather have a military ruler than being raped by this jingoistic, juggling jokers who cannot provide us basic necessities like affordable food, clean drinking water & 24/7 electricity, what to talk about development!
I am not sure why hoodbhouy would want to debate this idiot.
They should have recommended a ‘transition plan’ after consulting the journals no longer recognized under new criteria, instead of just communicating the blunt decision. This decision defeats the purpose of HEC, therefore, HEC authorities should look into this matter seriously.
Yes, they should have contacted us and then given us some time to understand and respond to the new criteria.
Dear sir,
I work at a public sector university in Lahore and have always been a silent appreciator of the work that is done by Pakistaniaat. It is really very sad to know that the HEC is being run by individuals who have absolutely no regard for the sincerity and hard work that goes into an enterprise as worthy as yours.
We too have been victims of similar treatment. I am also reminded of the preface of Dr Tariq Rahman’s latest book From Hindi to Urdu in which he too expresses his annoyance with the way HEC’s management handles things.
I wish the Pakistaniaat team an enriching editorial experience despite all the odds!
Regards
Mr.Masood please do not be deterred, HEC was axed like you rightly said and is insignificant unfortunately it probably boils down to bureaucratic red tape of the monetary variety and Thompson’s was just an excuse for the tape to be waxed monetarily as it is with a lot of our Government institutions. Please keep fighting the good fight.
We appreciate your concern Mr. Shahzeb & Ms. Mehreen… glad you guys shared your feelings with the readers of Pakistaniaat…
By the way, I have initiated the process for us to be indexed by ISI and pretty sure we will soon be indexed. Also, Pakistaniaat is already listed in MLA Directory of Periodicals and is also slated to be indexed by MLA Biliography.
Masood, did you say ISI? If so, HEC will come begging on four!!!!!
ISI means Thomson-Reuters…
According to latest reports the Maulvi who had blamed Risman of Blasphemy has been arrested. One of the people from his mosque, a person of conscience, reported to the police that the maulvi had himslef inserted burnt pages of the Qur’an in Rishman’s bag in order to “get rid of the Christians” in the area.
I would like to see how the court now applies the law about bearing false witness as stipulated in the Shariah. Furthermore, it is these maulvis who constantly keep preaching hatred and it is time they should be held accountable.
I am so vey happy to hear the latest development in this case. It seems that God has himself come to the rescue of this poor Christian child and has exposed our hypocricy. I hope that idiot gets convicted, hanged upside down, whipped with hundred lashes in Qadhafi Stadium, Lahore so that ALL of us can learn a lesson from this. Hail the guy who spoke the truth with even his life at stake but he does have a clean conscience. We need more of them in our country!
Yes, great to know that the muazzin, Hafiz Zubair, testified against the Maulvi, Khalid Jadoon. (http://dawn.com/2012/09/02/imam-held-in-blasphemy-case-after-new-testimony/).
It was really a shamfull and condemnable act that was done by Maulvi Khalid Jadoon who put false allegation against Rimsha. But finally the truth will pervail and he will be punished. It is dire need of time to to get rid of such so-called “Ulema” who consider themselves a Contractor of Islam.
Thank you for a wonderful piece. A very balanced point of view. I am going to share it widely.
Beautifully done. Hats off Dr. Raja! This is what precisely the educated & intellectaul Muslims need to do i.e. not to get carried away and be firm in our faith and belief. Many such episodes have taken place in history on these lines over the years but Islam is eternal and here to stay. It is not going anywhere. These jokers who made the movie could have died their metaphorical deaths in only 24 hours provided we ignored them!
TAX RETURNS VS DUAL NATIONALITY
The SC bench headed by CJ has recently disqualified 11 lawmakers under Article 62 and Article 63 of the Constitution. The ECP has also annulled the assembly membership of the disqualified lawmakers in accordance with the SC’s judgment. The bench said that the lawmakers were being disqualified under Article 62 and Article 63 of the Constitution. The court moreover directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to initiate proceedings against the said lawmakers who it said had committed perjury with respect to their oaths. The court also ordered the government to withdraw the amount spent on the salaries and perks on the disqualified lawmakers from them and deposit the amount in the national treasury. In his ruling CJ said in his ruling that they could no longer be considered‘sadiq’ and ‘n
Though I do not belong to a legal fertinity but it is very simple to understand that filing a false statement is a sign of dishonesty and may ultimately lead to disqualification of lawmakers. Now, it is a matter of fact that most of the lawmakers have also filed false tax returns incurring a heavy loss to government treasury. If the same principle applies on tax returns, the scrutiny of tax returns of our law makers will reveal eye-opening results. I as law abiding citizen would like to invite the freelance lawyers, who use to file cases on and off, on national issues and public interest, should come forward and save the nation from dishonest and sagacious persons.
We all are duty bound to safe the interest of the nation. In our country many development projects and many basic needs are dependent on tax collection but unfortunately nobody pays the actual tax. They do pay meager amount as a token responsibility. Now time has come to bring honest leadership and parliament should play its due role and act as role model by first following the rules and then demand the nation to sacrifice. It’s also the responsibility of SC to take suo motto action and install a full power Commission to investigate this matter before the next elections so that nation could select honest persons to build a better and bright Pakistan.
A Concerned Citizen
It’s sad. The grisly event horrifies one and all across the globe. My heart goes out for Malala and hundreds of others who must indeed be through similar hell though not reported. The Taliban is the primitive face of barbarism. It has nothing to do with values of any religion. When it spouts the name of Islam, it becomes all the more ludicrous. This article is balanced and reaches out to our heart. People of Pakistan are showing great grit in challenging the Talibanist savagery. Yes, it’s the only way through which its savage fangs can be dismantled. Malalas in our society do have an extraordinary power to work for greater good come what may. This is the only solace we have to live by.
When a 14 year old girl must be assassinated in order to protect an ideology, that ideology has no place in humanity.
Some questions arising with the incident of the Malala Yusufzai,
why she was attacked so late, after a year ago after operation in Swat?
Why she was attacked soon after the release of anti-Islamic film.
I’m not here to disgracing Malala, She is truly admirable and proud full for Pakistan. But we all want to know the fact and answers of the arising question.
Hi,
I was very saddened by the cruel targeting and shooting of Malala by the Taliban. I terrible act in the midst of many terrible acts in today’s Middle East.
I do put the blame upon the West and most strongly upon the USA and its continued manipulation of countries since the coup of Iran in 1953. A terrible history getting worse.
Malala is a very brave and intelligent girl but I do wonder about the BBC and its possible abuse of her youth to get them stories and to put her at risk in the Swat Valley which is a hotbed of Taliban tyranny. I do wonder if Malala and her family understood the risks.
On another note I am quite interested in Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar and her ability to create peace. I see great strides already in India where she seems well loved already. I do hope to see peace between India and Pakistan, soon as possible.
One of the big problems is the USA and its Predator Drones and the bombing and firing of Hellfire missiles in the regions of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan. This is crazy and it is pushing people to join with the Taliban because of the horrors imposed by the USA.
I do talk about these events and many others on my blog.
Have a good day.
I really appriciate you putting togather this list. Pakistani bloggers need a platform where they could come togather and express their opinions. personal blogs are one thing but a central forum where all the renowned bloggers and analysts could contribute would be “one giant step” for Pakistani blogosphere.
This confusion and hypocrisy that pervails in our society has also provoked me to rethink about our priorities, and what exactly we stand for. I’ve only recently started writing at https://ourlostperceptions.wordpress.com/
I look forward to learning more from your posts and I hope you will also learn from mine.
Thank you for such an interesting article. I am a Graduate student of Middle East Studies in Turkey, originally from Jamaica. I am so happy to know that this beautiful art work is being preserved… I would have loved to learn this art from such a master craftsman. I hope his children will preserve his legacy.
Agree with you Sensei…
Beautifully said Dr. Raja. The only problem with our current dictatorially corrupt democracy is that it is much worst than the previous democratic dictatorship. LOL 🙂
Wow. That’s great. Will get a chance to meet you………..Shaikh
Yes, certainly, Shaikh Sahib. I will stop by as soon as things settle down a bit. Masood
Welcome Raja sahib
Its really a big opportunity for the Pakistani students to interact with you. Is the exercise at NUML still going on?
Hope that you will consent to extend this interaction to the students of literature in the southern Punjab, sometime.

And it is not only the western technologies and weapons that necessitate the existence of west for the taliban, rather it is the existence of west as an ideological paradigm against which they measure and justify their existence. It gives meaning to their existence just as, in the past, USSR and US used each other’s existence to define and justify their policies and measures.
She is nice girl .Actually we hate people who gain lot of popularity within no time.this is in our blood.
Thats very good sign. Please keep up with such efforts for pakistan n its people.
It is good that Pakistanis, here in Pakistan as well as abroad, can see the damage done by Geo. It would be interesting if we get to read something about the government’s support for Geo in spite of their irresponsible behaviour and its reasons.
Its nothing to do with Jang group or any other news agency it is about our responsibility as a citizen not to damage the image of our country at any forum. As wise people said; Dyein bhi 7ghar chor daty hay…..
A very logical, informed and educated picture of talibanization in Pakistan that obviously is a scholarly reflection but the sorry state of affairs in this country has reached the height where concerned people are ignorant and incompetent and such ideas are totally lost on them. Ijust wish and pray that this is understood by those who are in a position to deliver…..if they ever do. I agree that we must raise our voice. To be silent is to negate our right to existence.
There is so much feeling in these words that any further comment is unnecessary. The bold words “speak” for themselves and call attention to the present indifference of the “civilized” world to the Gaza situation. I have known you Dr. Raja as a passionate speaker and an ardent lover of poetry but its more exciting to discover the “poet” in you. Great work!
Thank you for your kind words, Khadeeja!!
Nice and very rightly brought out aspects by masood Ashraf .
Thank you Raja Sahib for providing this valuable insight. While agreeing with all your views, I would say that every educated Pakistani is thinking and worried about the state of affairs Pakistan is in today because of these politicians. I do not support PAT stance because to my mind any religion based movements flourishes fundamentalist and extremism. For the others, both IK and NS are doing wrong with the progress and development of the nation. IK has led large number of people into such a quagmire where nothing is being done constructive for the democracy or the country other than the suffering men and women who are direct affectees of such a predicament. NS should also think if he has lost popularity on such a wider scale, he has got no right of paying no concrete attention to the voice of the people. One way or the other, a solution to the crises is the urgent and emergent need so that normal life can be restored.
Besides, its really at the wrong timing when the nation should should show solidarity by standing united behind the armed forces, these things have brought people and army face to face. In my opinion an immediate end should be brought through concrete dialogue as is the norm in democracy. Sage and sane people should intervene to help keep things at their right places.
Serfdome! Completely eliminated else where in the world is still celebrated in Pakistan in different shapes and styles. It flourishes before our very eyes but it’s ‘alright’ for many who have become victims of a legacy of complacency and who have stopped ‘dreaming.’ Life without dreams, hopes, risks, movement?
Why can’t we see beyond the leaders? Why is it all about Nawaz or Imran or Qadri Sahib? PEOPLE matter; PEOPLE should matter; PEOPLE sooner or later do matter. PEOPLE finally getting their voice, finally breaking free of lifelong bondage, and finally ‘breathing.’ This is how Europeans and Americans must have felt back in 19th century when they gave their blood for ‘life.’ Is ‘life’ not worth fighting for?
What was wrong for the colonial masters is wrong for anyone else. Ruthless suppression by colonizers was bad but they were foreigners, outsiders, non natives. Ruthless suppression by PEOPLE’S ruler against his own PEOPLE is much worse since they are his own. We can at least stand up for the PEOPLE.
Nawaz Sharif said that it was the matter of security and the army had to play its role.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – PM Nawaz Sharif has said that neither the government nor the army has asked to play any role of a mediator to bring the current political crisis to an end.
Addressing the National Assembly, Nawaz Sharif said that it was the matter of security and the army had to play its role.
Clarifying the army’s involvement in the political crisis, Nawaz said he received a call from army after which he allowed the latter to hold talks with the protesting groups, adding that the facts were misrepresented on media.
Nawaz said the protection of state buildings was the responsibility of the army under Article 245 of the constitution.
He said he will stand by his stance to uphold constitution and safeguard democracy.
The [redacted] of inqalab and azadi brigades are like lemmings. Penny wise, pound foolish I swear.
We had a nice “democracy” for a while, but it’s time to get back to business!!
Hilarious Sensei!
Agreed.
I am really glad that the writer “Masood Ashraf” who is settled abroad for quite sometimes has such a novel expression on the ongoing crisis. He sense so clearly what is required by the politician on the stage. Nice write up dear. I will just add that Imran Khan’s Tehreek e Insaaf had and probably has a great future because much of the youth and educated class want change in the country and he has been able to mobilize them but joining hands with characters like Tahir ul Qadri, Chaudrys and Sheikh Rashid has created a feeling of dismay. Above all his stubborn attitude, inflexible stance and timings of this entire drama will cost him and his party too much.
Dear Rohail: Thank you so much for your kind words and a nice appraisal of my writing. Even though I live in the US, I do have a certain degree of expertise–both lived and academic–about Pakistan and it is always nice to see that old friends are paying some attention to my work.
There is no tomorrow !! In the last 68 years there was no one to find out the right time to raise fingers on such criminal acts! And if not to day then there is no tomorrow !! Think! Again just find out the right time while sitting on the cozy Sofa’s!!
I am delighted to read this opinion of Raja Masood sb. It may be a paradigm shift but it is actually a recognition of the struggle that PTI is putting in to create an awareness about the democratic rights of the people of Pakistan. I do believe that the time has come when both masses and political leader have to care more about their responsibilities rather than the personal gains. It is the biggest contribution of PTI that it has brought a change in thought of the people of Pakistan, the educated ones at least. However, being a concerned Pakistani citizen, I am expecting that better sense would soon prevail among the political leadership to solve the more urgent issues and problems that Pakistani nation has to confront these days.
Nicely put.
My good friend thank you for voicing these hopeful words. Though you have addressed this to the specifics of Pakistan, your counsel of intentions could apply with small modifications to EVERY country in the world. Blessings upon you, and please know how much you have lifted my spirits with your words and thoughts.
Thank you, Mark, for your kind words. I agree this is a global issue and we all need to work for peace in solidarity.
well written article by Raja Sahib and a wonderful comment by Mark Adams.
I think the last statement is very relevant , and should be given much thought. Iqbal, after all was a human, and his thoughts were for his time, and the world has since changed a lot. Some of his thoughts do not even apply in the modern times.
The slide show below is really cool! Great job Honey! You should mention how many kilometers you’ve walked!
You are welcome back home Raja sab.
This overwhelmingly bums me out. What you refer to as “insignificant” work both here and abroad, is, in fact, monumental. There are people that emphatically appreciate the education that you provide in America and abroad. I would hate to think that this moment in American history has forced us to be so dejected that we’ve reached a level of inaction. For me, that is unacceptable. Myself, and my colleagues are enlivened and invigorated and ready to fight.
Your voice, your knowledge, your leadership is inspirational to many, Dr. Raja. Please don’t give up on those of us that still need and want to work with you.
Beautifully written. We definitely need to identify the ‘na maloom afraad’ who are the reason behind such disappearances. Their kidnapping and lobbying of religious fanaticism doesn’t make it look coincidental, it’s much more deep and planned. Agenda is aptly put in the article above, the effort is to silence any progressive voice in Pakistan so that we may end up in a deaf and dumb nation who builds shrines for murderers and burn the innocents on account of some ‘kaala kanoon’ ( black law)

Reminds me of the Zia era. Mein nahi jaanta, mein nahi manta. Although I am not FOR the current PPP regime but still I would chant at the top of my voice ‘Tum kitne Bhutto maaro gey, har ghar se Bhutto niklay ga’ & ‘Go Nawaz Go’!
This is NOT Islam. Not in my religion’s name!
Dr. Raja has already done much significant things regarding US Pakistan relationships. his efforts are visible through his projects like UNT NUML Partnership and his efforts to make Pakistani Scholars of Literature enjoy the previlege of UNT scholarships and facilities. This new site developed by him is gonna prove another milestone in his achievements for his country. When seen through the lens of his academics, Masood Raja is an asset of Pakistan.
Very interesting points and insights. To add further, Pakistan Army is thinking about water within its mainstream strategies. This year’s Army Green Book ran my article on “Water Wars and our Response”. I would be happy to share it with you.
Hassan Abbas: You and your work was on my mind when I wrote this. I am so glad to know that the army is working on this. I would love to read your article. If it is available online, please send me the link and I will post it on this and my other blogs.
Dynastic politics means continuity of Empires like kingships and surely a poison for democracy.
Thank you Dr. Sb. Its much enlightening. I wish you had included Paulo Freire in the loop with Ngugi and Gouri. The points raised by you are interesting and critical because all our education targets the high marks in examination and so there’s an utter absence of critical thinking. The absence of critical thinking in any nation would make them slaves of the system rather than leaders of the system. Besides, the age old and rusted system being followed by us, we are serving the benefit of the capitalist by producing nothing more than type of followers he wishes. The need of the hour is to seek out new meaning and develop a humanistic hermeneutic system rather than keeping things restricted to Eurocentrism or islamic hermeneutics, as we do in our universities and madrassas system. It is pretty right we are producing our cultural haters and that generates another difficulty in the identity of a particular individual and gives birth to a hybridised individual who is still more harmful because of the doubtful loyalties that person may project. The need is to develop a kind of syncretism with the times and cultures we are inhabiting and reform our primary education system. Not only the education system but also the democratic system needs a thorough overhaul. one last thing, we do not encourage the students in Pakistan to read books, what to talk of critically read the books. Philosophers and theorists are completely ignored even at the higher levels of education. I think reading philosophy in every area of studies must be declared compulsory. only this is the way to develop the minds of students to ask questions instead of making them mass minds.
Thank you for your thoughts, Dr. Zia. I agree Freire is very pertinent here; I had not focused on his work because I was looking at the educational system and its impact on the national identity. I will probably write a separate article about critical pedagogy and Freire.
Wonderful analysis of Education system in most often formerly colonised states, with reference Freire. I would suggest to get it published in some Pakistani newspaper as well.
Great initiative Sensei… I am excited about this development…
Thank you for this. A long awaited wish fulfilled. All my services are available for this. Hopefully it will be a literary service and a great contribution to the world of research on or about Pakistan.
Thank you again.
Very creative and you are breaking a stereotype as well that only women can knit.
What a fascinating piece. What makes it more significant is that its written in urdu that makes it accessible to those with Urdu medium background. I will share it with my fellow colleagues and the student body at large.
By the way, the Current issue not resolving properly has now been fixed!!!
